BVPD Reminds Drivers to Be Cautious on Roads After Elk Hit By Vehicle

On December 8, 2025, at approximately 1730, a driver in Bear Valley Springs struck a bull elk on Bear Valley Road at San Juan Drive. The elk was standing in the road when the westbound vehicle rounded a curve and hit it. The vehicle sustained significant damage in the collision, but the driver was not injured.

BVPD Sgt. Jay Rivera responded to the crash. After investigating, Sgt. Rivera determined that the vehicle was traveling the posted speed limit and that distracted driving was not a factor.

Sgt. Rivera monitored the elk for approximately one hour to determine if the animal needed to be dispatched. The elk, while visibly stunned, remained on its feet and was mobile.

At 0530 on December 9, Volunteer In Police Service (VIPS) wildlife specialist Chris Clenard followed up to check on the animal’s condition. At that time, it became clear the animal was mortally wounded. He contacted Sgt. Rivera, who humanely dispatched the elk.

Elk are a common sight in Bear Valley Springs, and the Bear Valley Police Department reminds all drivers to be cautious on our roads. Collisions with wildlife can cause significant vehicle damage and pose a serious risk of injury.

Remember, posted speed limits are for optimal conditions. When it is dark outside or visibility is affected in any way, reduce your speed.
