Winter Readiness: Be Prepared for Severe Weather

The Bear Valley Police Department and Community Services District are helping residents prepare for the potential for a severe winter season.

Current forecasts indicate there is a significant possibility that this year’s El Niño could reach historic strength.

With that in mind, we are taking steps to help make sure our community is prepared.

On October 1, the Bear Valley Police Department hosted a Winter Readiness Workshop. Links to the documents presented and distributed at the workshop can be found below.

The key takeaway: Be prepared to go at least seven days without outside assistance.

Make sure you have a supply of:

  • Food
  • Water (at least one gallon per person per day)*
  • Medication
  • First-aid supplies
  • Child and pet care supplies
  • Sanitation and hygiene products, such as soap and toilet paper

*The CSD’s water system relies heavily on pumps and booster stations throughout the valley to deliver water to higher elevations. These booster stations are equipped with generators to maintain power during an outage. However, during a major weather event, refueling may not be possible, creating the possibility of widespread water service interruptions.

It’s also important to be prepared for a power outage at your home. Make sure you have flashlights and spare batteries, warm clothing, extra blankets, and anything else you may need to remain safe and comfortable during a prolonged blackout.

The CSD will send significant weather alerts and updates through Nixle, our emergency alert system. If you have not signed up for Nixle, visit www.bvcsd.org/nixle to subscribe to email and text alerts.
